Kind words from parents
Engaging in school-type activities before starting school is crucial for helping children develop essential skills and routines that set them up for success. These early experiences not only build confidence and familiarity with academic concepts but also foster a love for learning, ensuring a smoother transition into the classroom environment.
Let's practise writing the letter, developing shape recognition, eye-hand co-ordination and fine motor skills. So many skills in just one activity!
Thes beginning stages of reading, sounding out consonant, vowel, consonent words (CVC) and some high frequency words - a great start to beginning reading!
Using the focus sound, colouring any items from a selection. This is part of hearing and manipulating sounds, essential for phonemic awareness!
Given a selection of written letters to choose from, your child colours the letter according to the focus sound. As we know letters can take many shapes, so it is important to have exposure to all the different shapes.
Cutting and pasting is an essential skill for school starters as many school activities require this skill. Developing eye-hand co-ordination and fine motor skills, whilst also focusing on matching pictures with words.
All of our sounds come with fun animal characters with names to match them. Alliteration is a great way to develop hearing initial sounds of words. So join Lola the ladybug, Maddie the mouse and many more while learning sounds through alliteration and fun!

What is in the Sounds and Spelling Success
Handwriting practise
Handwriting and tracing practice is essential for developing fine motor skills, which are crucial for writing and everyday tasks. It enhances hand-eye coordination laying a solid foundation for effective writing. Tracing letters reinforces letter recognition, helping children internalise their shapes and sounds, which is vital for reading and spelling. Consistent practice promotes muscle memory, making writing more fluid and automatic over time. Additionally, it fosters focus and discipline, teaching children to concentrate on forming letters correctly. This boosts their confidence in writing and supports their overall academic success.
Financial cost
Investing $17 in this resource can significantly save future costs in private tutoring by providing parents with a comprehensive tool to support their child's literacy development at home. By engaging in these activities early on, children build a strong foundation in reading and writing, which can reduce the need for additional tutoring later. Since the PDF is downloadable, you can print and use the materials repeatedly, allowing for ongoing practice without incurring extra costs. This continuous reinforcement not only enhances skills but also boosts confidence, making children more independent learners. Ultimately, this small investment can lead to substantial savings and a positive educational experience for your child.
Phonemic awareness development
By choosing items that start with specific sounds, children learn to associate letters with their corresponding phonemes, strengthening their understanding of sound-letter relationships. Activities like matching pictures to sounds encourage them to listen carefully and differentiate between similar sounds, reinforcing auditory discrimination. Additionally, selecting letters that represent specific sounds allows children to practice recognising and articulating those sounds, which is crucial for developing early reading skills. Overall, these targeted exercises build a strong phonemic foundation, essential for successful literacy development.
Scissor work
Cutting and pasting is an essential skill that promotes fine motor development, hand-eye coordination, and cognitive processing. As children learn to use scissors, they strengthen their hand muscles and improve dexterity, which is vital for writing and other everyday tasks. The act of cutting requires focus and precision, helping to enhance their ability to control movements. Pasting items also involves spatial awareness and the ability to follow sequences, as children decide where to place each piece. Additionally, these activities foster creativity and problem-solving skills, allowing children to express their ideas visually while reinforcing their understanding of shapes and patterns
Strong Foundations Matter More Than Ever
According to the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC):
"Children who start school behind in language and cognitive skills are more likely to remain behind in later years."
Early intervention changes trajectories.
Research shows:
Daily literacy activities—even as short as 10 minutes a day—significantly boost reading and spelling skills (NELP, 2008)
Phonics-based, parent-led home learning improves school readiness and long-term success (Sénéchal & LeFevre, 2014)
Children with strong early literacy are more likely to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally throughout life (Castles, Rastle & Nation, 2018)
Your effort today unlocks their confidence tomorrow.
Why build explicit literacy skills before they start school?
Build a strong foundation
Building explicit literacy skills early provides a solid foundation for reading and writing, which are essential for all subjects in school. Early exposure helps children understand the basics of letters, sounds, and word formation.
Enhanced learning
Children who have a head start in literacy are more likely to keep pace with their peers and excel academically. Early literacy skills contribute to better comprehension, critical thinking, and overall learning capabilities
Confidence boost
Developing literacy skills before school can significantly boost a child's confidence. When they enter the classroom with a grasp of these concepts, they feel more prepared and eager to participate, leading to a more positive school experience.
Parental Engagement
Involving parents in early literacy activities fosters a strong bond and encourages a positive attitude toward learning. It creates an engaging learning environment at home, reinforcing the importance of education from an early age.
